To get a deeper look into his experience, philosophy, and what drives his work, we sat down with Tom for a quick Q&A. Here’s what he had to say:

What inspired you to become an attorney?

I always wanted to help people in times of need. My parents taught me to stand up for what’s right, and I wanted to do that for others. Becoming an attorney felt like a natural way to help people navigate tough times.

Do you have a favorite area of law?

Absolutely not! I find myself exploring new areas often, whether that be by researching case law or finding something unique in the law.

What tips or advice would you give a law student studying for the Bar Exam?

The bar exam is nothing more than a test of your test taking skills, and has nothing to do with your abilities as a lawyer. I would say the same thing about law school as well.

Relax, be confident, and go give it your all. Take breaks to recharge—go for a walk, call a friend. And trust yourself; you’ve made it this far for a reason. You got this.

What was the hardest class in law school?

Constitutional law. The concepts were heavy, and the cases never seemed to end. It stretched my brain, but it taught me to think deeply—something I lean on when tackling complex cases now.

How would you describe your approach with clients?

Understanding, empathetic, and direct. I treat clients like family. I listen, I’m honest, and I fight for what’s best for them. My wife always says “Dad will fix it” at home to my kids (although most of the time she says it jokingly), and I try to bring that same care and commitment to my clients. Some say I do not have a good “bedside manner” due to my directness, but a big part of my job is delivering bad news that people do not like to hear.

What makes Horgan Law different from other firms in Omaha?

We’re not just about cases; we’re about people. We want to build relationships that will last forever. I built this firm to feel like a home—welcoming, trustworthy, and focused on what matters to you. Our team takes time to know your story, not just your file.

What’s one piece of advice you give every new client?

Delegate your worries and headaches onto me. Be honest with me, and I’ll be honest with you. Trust is everything, whether it’s in a marriage or a legal case. Lay it all out, and we’ll tackle it together.

What is your go-to coffee order?

Cold Brew, black, light ice (more coffee).

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?

Spending time with my family. The “boring” parts of life are my most favorite – sunny weekends with no plans, taking care of the kids, going to the pool, golf, etc.

What was your first job?

Landscaping work at 14. Taught me hard work and how to talk to people—skills I still use every day as a dad and a lawyer.

What is one of your favorite shows you have watched recently?

The Office is my all time favorite.

What is one item you can’t live without at the office?

Diet Pepsi and my children’s artwork which keeps me grounded.

And I guess my calendar….

Diet Pepsi and my children’s artwork which keeps me grounded.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I know my way around a grill.

Dogs or cats?

Dogs. I have a dog named Charley that we rescued while living in New York City. He drives me crazy, but is the best dog a family could ever have.

What led you to start Horgan Law?

Clients who needed proper care and attention. I wanted to build something that reflected my values—helping people with honesty and heart. After years in bigger firms, I knew I could serve families better my own way, like I strive to be there for my own.

What question do you get asked the most from clients?

“What will this cost?”
